For the residents of Ireneplein (Irene Square), we developed together with Studio ID Eddy a design based on the principles of placemaking and active community participation. The residents live around a central square that was recently redeveloped. As part of this redevelopment, a public artwork was added, which we designed together with and for the residents and has now been delivered.

The square has a strong identity and a rich history of use. Even before the redevelopment, a circular path ran around the square, which in winter, during frost, can be used as an ice-skating track. In addition, the square is an important location for Catholic processions, during which flowers are traditionally scattered across the space. These two elements — movement and ritual — formed the conceptual starting point for the design.

Along the circular path, flower motifs have been integrated, forming a symbolic floral garland for the residents. The design creates a cheerful appearance and directly references the processions and the collective use of the square. At the same time, the flowers function as playful elements: children can jump from flower to flower and invent their own games.

In the grassed area, three Flocci planters have been placed: a red, a yellow and an orange composition. The colours correspond with the flowers along the path and strengthen the visual cohesion of the overall design. The Flocci elements incorporate seating, inviting residents to sit together and spend time in the square. Their organic forms reinforce the floral imagery of the path and contribute to a welcoming, informal place for gathering and connection.

The result is a public artwork and meeting place that is not only aesthetically meaningful, but also strengthens everyday use, social interaction and the identity of Ireneplein (Irene Square) — developed in close collaboration with its residents.
